His Business Rule parser is a clear example: he took a process that was tangled, fragile, and slightly dreaded, and made it safe and legible - not just functional, but actually elegant to use. I had the pleasure of getting to know Neal Vazquez during our time together in the Master of Information and Data Science program at UC Berkeley, where we were part of the same cohort. Beyond being a great collaborator, Neal quickly became a good friend, someone I could count on for an honest conversation, a laugh between deadlines, or a thoughtful perspective when I needed one.
One project stands out in particular. We collaborated on a research analysis of TV ad strategy in the 2016 presidential election, digging into how the candidates used the electoral college system, ad timing, and messaging to shape their campaigns. Working with Neal on that project, I saw firsthand the sharp analytical mind and genuine intellectual curiosity he brings to his work. I am writing to recommend Emiliano (Neal) Vazquez for admission into the UC Berkeley I School’s Data Science program. I was thrilled when Neal reached out to me to ask for a recommendation for him to attend a data science program. Neal had worked for me as a Digital Optimization Strategist (DOS) for approximately two years while I was the Sr. Manager of Design & Optimization at Nuance Communications. Our focus was on performance optimization of live chat engagements for Fortune 500 clients. I left Nuance in December 2019 to pursue a new role as the Director of Trading at The Trade Desk but have kept in contact with Neal since, mainly providing mentorship and career advice.
When I originally hired Neal in 2018, he did not yet have the data acumen or client-facing presence that the role required or that other candidates already possessed. What he did have though, was a desire to learn, tons of motivation, fantastic energy, humility, and a willingness to do whatever necessary to succeed. The first several months that Neal was on the team he struggled immensely to ramp-up, however he kept a positive outlook, put in the work and persevered. Within six months, Neal was contributing on one of the largest pieces of business in the division and continued to focus on his professional growth throughout the time we worked together.
As Neal continued to grow as a DOS he became increasingly focused on taking a more advanced and statistical approach to the role. A/B and multivariate testing is a common approach to optimization at Nuance and Neal has taken an involved approach to ensure that he is pushing the boundaries of how he tested and how he interpreted the results to give the most interesting and actionable findings to his clients. He also took up an effort to advocate for bringing a more rigorous test and learn approach to the virtual assistant optimization group which had historically been a separate business unit taking their own separate, and more intuition-driven, approach to optimization. Neal championed the utilization of A/B testing, statistical measurement methodologies, projection modeling, etc. as best practice within this group.
I am fully convinced that Neal’s personal drive will lead him to success in this program. As such I strongly recommend Neal for seat in the Data Science program. His energy, motivation, and perseverance will not only help him succeed but will cause a ripple effect that will cause those around him to work harder and succeed.
I’ve worked with Neal directly and indirectly for many years and he is known as the “go to” guy. Need an answer about how I needed to interpret some info for my client? Go to Neal. Need a last minute report that I could have sworn we had a template for but I can’t for the life of me locate? I bet Neal knows where it is (and remind me about that one weird formula that will make excel crash if I don’t cross my fingers first)
Our last project together, Neal supported the entire program’s migration into Spanish. I relied on him to ensure we had the entire program mapped, milestones outlined, tickets created, initial translations done and ready for client approval, basic proof of concepts at the ready just in case, all while being a really fun coworker and subject expert for our client.
He’s personable and easy to get along with and contributed to fun work days while being awesome at whatever tasks needed to be done. He’s an all around asset and even when we didn’t work together directly, I could see that he was comfortable taking lead when he needed to and taking direction and working well with any team he was on. I miss our meetings and interactions and whatever endeavor he chooses next, I know he will be successful.

There are three aspects I look for when hiring a candidate for the Digital Strategist role that Neal Vazquez has held for the past few years at Nuance (now part of Microsoft):
1) Data manipulation from multiple dispersed sources with a focus on long-term automation
2) Ability to translate data into actionable insights to an executive client
3) Technical understanding of the product and its ability to coordinate changes alongside an engineering team.
With that being said, I believe Neal’s solid understanding of mathematics, statistics, broad experience in “big data” extraction & manipulation has given him the ability to be successful in the first aspect of this discipline. Although, as his current role doesn’t support the direction that the general data industry is advancing, I understand Neal’s desire to further his skills through continued education in this field and believe he would thrive given the opportunity to advance his skillset.
The second aspect of Neal’s role is all about “soft-skills”, understanding client needs and the ability to demonstrate ROI. Neal, although not currently a Senior, is someone who I am very hands-off with in this area because of his proven ability to drive results with key customers. His strong ability to actively listen to customers and their needs has proven to be extremely beneficial in providing insights that drive results.
Lastly, Neal’s understanding of our tech stack and its abilities has advanced through the years to the point of being a subject matter expert.
During our time working alongside each other at Nuance, I’ve witnessed Neal advance his knowledge and skillset. To pursue a deeper knowledge and understanding of data science is the next logical step, and I am not at all surprised by Neal’s continued commitment to this endeavor.

I met Neal back in college when we were both studying Philosophy at UCLA. We took several classes together over the course of two years. A particular class I remember taking together was Feminist Philosophy. Neal had many insightful thoughts and brought wonderful conversations to the class discussions.
